Via Transportation, Inc. (VIA): The Transit Digitization Toll Bridge Nearing Breakeven

Via is the dominant software layer that runs the day to day operations of the world's public transit agencies, and the inflection now underway is the quiet arrival of profitability on the back of a subscription base that has nearly doubled its customer count over the past two years.

The engine of the story is operating leverage. The adjusted EBITDA margin has improved from a deep loss three years ago to near breakeven in the latest quarter, even while revenue growth has stayed in the low to mid 20s. The market is pricing this as a software multiple rather than a services multiple, which is only defensible if the margin path to positive EBITDA holds.

The latest quarter brought revenue of $135.7 million and a customer count of 847, both climbing in the low to mid 20s, and management pointed to adjusted EBITDA turning positive in the fourth quarter. The question the next two quarters resolve is whether that breakeven is real structural leverage or the tail of a one time IPO and litigation cost cycle.
