trivago is three years into a brand-led rebuild under returned chief executive Johannes Thomas, and the latest quarter asks whether that rebuild is becoming an earnings engine or a mix story. The Düsseldorf hotel-search platform just posted its sixth straight double-digit revenue gain and its first positive second-quarter adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization since 2023. That swing arrived in the season management still calls its investment half, which is why the market is tempted to treat the print as proof the turnaround has crossed a threshold. The temptation is premature. Headline growth outran the core click marketplace by a wide margin, and the gap is the whole argument.
The extra growth sat in other revenue after last summer's purchase of Holisto, now run as trivago DEALS, a merchant booking engine that puts the company on the till rather than only on the click. Management also dropped a one-month reporting lag at DEALS, so four months of that business landed inside a three-month period. Core referral revenue, the auction that still pays most of the bills, rose at a high-single-digit pace even as Americas and Developed Europe both grew in the mid-teens. Return on advertising spend, the ratio of referral revenue to marketing outlay, improved globally because branded traffic converted better, not because the company spent less. Expedia Group brands, which also control the vote, cut their share of the auction by about ten points in a year while Booking Holdings held steady.
Cash remains large relative to the equity, long-term debt is absent, and the full-year outlook now calls for mid-teens revenue growth and about $34 million of adjusted earnings. The Nasdaq ADS recently traded in the mid-sixes with a capitalization near $447 million, so the equity is no longer priced as a distressed stub. What the price does not settle is whether referral growth can close on the headline once DEALS annualizes, whether Expedia's bid retreat is diversification or a parent stepping back from its own marketplace, and whether a 2028 double-digit margin target is a plan or a slogan. The next several quarters of referral prints resolve that ranking.
