Teck Resources (TECK): Copper Stability Meets Merger Clearance

Teck Resources is no longer a coal-and-metals conglomerate waiting for a copper ramp. It is a funded copper-and-zinc producer whose newest Chilean mine has now printed three straight stable quarters, while the equity still trades as a claim on an unfinished merger of equals with Anglo American. The investment debate is whether the cash engine is already good enough on a standalone basis, or whether the price still embeds a discount for Chinese clearance that may slip past the original close window. Adjusted profit attributable to shareholders reached $687 million in the second quarter, which is what this portfolio earns when copper holds near $6 a pound and Quebrada Blanca stays on plan.

The print is not a one-mine story, and that is the point the market still underweights. Copper output rose at Highland Valley, Antamina, Carmen de Andacollo, and Quebrada Blanca together, and copper net cash unit costs fell as molybdenum, silver, and zinc credits thickened. Cash from operations of $1.2 billion lifted net cash during the quarter. Liquidity finished June above $7 billion. That fortress balance sheet is the residue of the steelmaking-coal sale to Glencore and a year of restrained distributions, and it is also the asset the Anglo Teck combination is trying to lock under a Vancouver headquarters before Beijing finishes its review.

Guidance was left unchanged even after the beat, because Highland Valley and Antamina are scheduled for lower second-half grades and planned downtime. Zinc concentrate production fell on mine-plan grades at Red Dog, though Trail's feed strategy turned the smelter into the zinc segment's profit engine. The remaining question is not whether Teck can generate cash at these prices. It is whether Chinese merger review clears without remedies that impair the Collahuasi-to-Quebrada Blanca growth path, or whether Teck spends another copper cycle as a well-capitalized independent while the multiple stays compressed.
