Molson Coors (TAP): Cash Harvest Meets a Shrinking Beer Category

Molson Coors is trying to rebuild a growth company on top of a beer category that is still losing occasions. Horizon 2030, launched after Rahul Goyal became chief executive, splits the job into three parts: defend the core power brands, squeeze profit from value beer, and buy scale in Beyond Beer. The second-quarter print showed that program still running behind the category rather than ahead of it. Brand volume fell 4.8 percent even as the company restated the full-year outlook. The live debate is whether the cash engine can fund a real mix-and-adjacency rebuild, or whether the franchise is simply being harvested on a smaller base.

The volume hole is not a rounding error. Americas shipments led the decline, and Midwest Premium aluminum pricing added about $40 million of extra cost in the quarter alone. Underlying pretax income still dropped more than a quarter on constant currency, which means price and mix only partly filled the gap. Fever-Tree posted its strongest United States quarter since the partnership began, and Monaco Cocktails tracked ahead of deal math in its first owned period. Those wins sit on a franchise that already took a multi-billion goodwill write-down on the Americas reporting unit last year. The market is being asked to pay for a turnaround that has not yet shown up in the volume line.

Underlying diluted earnings came in at $1.58, down from the year-ago print, while year-to-date underlying free cash flow rose sharply. Net leverage sat at 2.53 times trailing underlying earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, just above the long-stated ceiling. The next several quarters decide whether Coors Banquet, Peroni, Fever-Tree, and Monaco can stabilize the mix enough that volume declines stop eating the savings program. The open question is whether Horizon 2030 changes earnings power or merely slows the shrink.
