Sasol Limited spent the year ended in June proving that the foundation business can still throw off cash when the plants run and the fuel crack widens. That is a different story from the first-half slump, when earnings almost vanished and the equity traded as a stressed South African energy name. The September results close a Capital Markets Day delivery year. Secunda posted its best annual output in five years, group net debt fell to a decade low, and the Southern African oil breakeven moved down to $49 a barrel. The board still withheld the final dividend because net debt remains above the policy gate. The investment debate is whether this is a structural reset that crosses that gate, or a fourth-quarter fuels spike that fades once Middle East tightness and the inventory unwind recede.
The print is real and it is uneven. Fuels earnings before interest and tax more than tripled as Secunda rose and Natref ran Prax South Africa's idle share while that partner sits in business rescue. International Chemicals posted late-year ethylene strength the company already tells investors not to annualize. Chemicals Africa swung to a loss, Mozambique gas volumes declined, and impairments near $1 billion still write off every rand capitalized at a fully impaired Secunda liquid-fuels unit. Free cash flow slipped even as operating cash rose, because working capital overshot the guided band after the Hormuz shock and the Natref inventory build.
At a mid-September American depositary receipt price near $14, the market is capitalizing Sasol at roughly $9 billion. That is a low-single-digit multiple of the year's adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation. The multiple prices a cheap energy cycle and a still-frozen payout, not a restored compounder. The next stretch of results resolves three things: whether net debt can sit sustainably under the dividend threshold, whether Secunda holds its destoning gains through a planned shutdown year, and whether International Chemicals can earn inside management's guided band once the conflict tailwind is gone.
