Sprout Social is no longer trying to grow its way out of a mid-market social-scheduling franchise. After the board approved a workforce reduction of about one-fifth of staff in July, the Chicago software company is trading growth for a manufactured step-up in non-GAAP operating profit. The second-quarter print already showed the mix shift working at the high end: customers that spend at least $30,000 in annual recurring revenue now contribute more than three-fifths of subscription billing, and that cohort's trailing subscription contribution rose twenty percent. What changed is not the product category. What changed is the willingness to shrink the organization around the customers that actually pay.
The tension sits in the rest of the book. Subscription growth is already in the high single digits even before the company starts lapping the NewsWhip media-intelligence deal in the third quarter, and management is not calling for a better demand backdrop. The cheaper layer of the book, once the volume engine, is guided to slightly negative growth this year and has already fallen from a majority of subscription revenue two years ago to well under half. Non-GAAP operating income cleared the prior outlook by several million, cash rose to about $120 million, and the board authorized a $50 million repurchase. Those are real improvements. They are also the kind of improvements a software company produces when it stops hiring and starts harvesting.
The third-quarter revenue band sits essentially flat with the just-reported quarter, and the full-year sales midpoint implies roughly eight percent growth against last year's $458 million base. The raised non-GAAP operating-income range and a year-end margin target near seventeen percent are the figures the market is being asked to underwrite. The open question is whether Trellis, the in-house AI agent now shipping a paid Plus tier, and the larger-account cohort can keep the top line from rolling over while a thinner staff still ships the product those accounts buy. That is the test the next several quarters have to settle.
