Sprouts Farmers Market (SFM): New Stores Carry a Comps Reset

Sprouts Farmers Market is a specialty grocer whose growth story has flipped from same-store acceleration to a unit-led holding pattern. After a boom year in which existing stores carried the print, the first half of fiscal 2026 shows new boxes doing the work while comparable sales have slipped into negative territory. Jack Sinclair, the chief executive since twenty nineteen, is slated to become executive chairman on the first day of fiscal twenty twenty-seven, with president and chief operating officer Nick Konat stepping into the top job. The equity debate is whether the small-box, health-enthusiast format still compounds once the prior-year hangover fades, or whether a more cautious shopper has permanently trimmed the basket.

The second-quarter print shows that split clearly. Net sales still rose because seven new stores and a still-growing digital channel offset a smaller basket at existing locations. E-commerce now accounts for a mid-teens share of sales, and the Sprouts private brand continues to outgrow the rest of the mix. Gross margin barely held in the high thirties as loyalty rewards and fuel costs nicked the rate. The income statement remains profitable at a specialty-grocery standard, but operating income slipped even as the share count fell.

Management now frames the rest of the year around roughly flat comparable sales and earnings before interest and taxes in a narrow band just below last year's run-rate, measured on a fifty-two week basis. Diluted earnings are still expected to rise modestly on a smaller share base and a planned repurchase program. The third quarter is described as another stretch of fixed-cost pressure as the company opens its heaviest quarterly slate of new boxes. The question for the next several prints is whether traffic and units in the basket stabilize once the produce comparison eases, or whether the lower-engaged customer keeps trading down.
