Rentokil Initial is a newly led pest-control and hygiene platform that just told the market it prefers volume over a long-advertised North America margin promise. Mike Duffy, four months into the chief executive seat after Andy Ransom's exit, retired the 20% North America operating-margin goal set for 2027. Cost savings now fund reinvestment rather than a march toward that number. Adjusted operating profit still rose in the June half. Leverage, measured as net debt to adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization, finally sat inside the target band for the first time since the Terminix deal. The equity debate is whether that is a grown-up reset or a confession that the integration-era margin story is over.
The June half still looks like a cash-and-deleveraging print. Continuing revenue reached $3.6 billion with organic growth, sales from the existing book excluding acquisitions, of 3.6%. Free cash flow, cash left after operating needs and ordinary capital spending, converted at 96% of adjusted profit. North America pest-control services, the franchise the market actually pays for, only grew 2.4% organically in the second quarter, and residential lead flow softened into July, especially in termite work tied to weaker housing markets. That is the tension: the balance sheet finally looks post-deal, while the growth engine that was supposed to re-rate the equity is still crawling.
Colleague retention in North America improved and the small-branch rollout for the year is already done. Those are real operating wins. They do not answer whether Duffy's volume-first plan can lift commercial and national-account growth without giving back the pest-services margin that already sits near the old target. The next several quarters decide if the July lead-flow wobble is a housing-season scare or the start of another North America stall. Can a repaired balance sheet and a United States-based operator turn mid-single-digit organic into a compounding story, or did the market correctly cut a multiple that had been pricing the retired margin arrival?
