Rogers Corporation is an engineered-materials specialist trying to prove that a year of leadership turnover and a large ceramic-substrate write-down produced a cleaner operating company rather than a smaller one. Ali El-Haj ran the franchise as interim chief after R. Colin Gouveia departed the prior summer, then received the permanent title in mid-May. The second-quarter print is the first full quarter under that permanent mandate. Demand is recovering in industrial and electronics channels, yet earnings conversion still fights commodity tightness and an underutilized ceramics plant in China. The investment argument turns on whether that conversion can keep improving as volumes rise, or whether factory absorption and raw-material lag keep trapping the recovery in the mid-thirties on gross margin.
The operating reset is visible in the mix of volume and cost. Net sales reached $217 million, a high-single-digit gain versus the year-ago quarter. Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, a cash-earnings proxy that strips restructuring and equity compensation, reached $38 million. That is a mid-teens margin versus a low-teens print a year earlier. Currency helped the top line, but management says roughly two-thirds of the sales lift came from demand and mix rather than translation. The counterargument is that adjusted earnings of $0.92 a share still landed below the company's own midpoint because freight delays, tight copper and silver, and a one-time facility event together cost more than ten cents.
Cash and short-term deposits now exceed $211 million against unused revolver capacity of $450 million and no drawn bank debt. Third-quarter sales guidance spans $233 million to $243 million if aerospace and defense finally join the other three end markets. Gross-margin guidance only inches higher because the China ceramic plant still costs about eighty-five basis points of underutilization. The next two prints and the late-September investor day decide whether factory absorption and AI sampling convert into billed sales, or whether the equity keeps paying a recovery multiple for a still-messy conversion.
