Rambus (RMBS): Product Cycle Strength After a Violent Multiple Reset

Rambus has finished the conversion from a patent-licensing house into a product company whose memory-interface chips sit inside the AI server buildout. The June quarter was the first period in which reported revenue cleared the two-hundred-million mark, and the chip line set another record on DDR5 register-clock-driver demand. The board then recycled cash into a one-hundred-million accelerated repurchase with Mizuho. The market has already taken the other side of that story. Shares now trade near the yearly low after collapsing from a spring peak, pricing the risk that DDR5 leadership is a cycle rather than a franchise.

Product now accounts for nearly half of the print, up from a royalty-heavy mix a few years ago. That mix shift is the entire investment case. Chips carry lower gross margin than licenses, but they grow with server units rather than with contract renewals. Royalties still contributed $84.2 million in the quarter. The third-quarter guide then steps that line down. Adjusted operating margin, which excludes stock compensation and one-time items, held at 45 percent even as research spending and a small restructuring charge lifted reported expenses. The counterargument is that Montage Technology and Renesas Electronics can take share at the next speed node, and that memory-supply tightness into next year caps how long the register-clock-driver run can last.

Cash and marketable securities ended June at $824.9 million with no funded debt. Operating cash flow of $61.2 million funded a deliberate inventory build and still left room for the later repurchase. Multiplexed registered modules and high-bandwidth-memory controllers remain next-year stories rather than this year's. The live question is whether the current multiple already assumes that the product cycle fades, or whether it still requires another year of share defense at the DDR5 node to justify even this lower price.
