Rocky Brands (RCKY): Brand Momentum Outruns a Tariff Refund

Rocky Brands is a Nelsonville work and outdoor footwear house whose Honeywell-era rubber brands are finally compounding after years of inventory cleanup. The second-quarter print is the fastest growth stretch since the post-acquisition hangover, and it arrives with a legal windfall that inflates reported earnings. The investment debate is whether XTRATUF-led demand and a rebuilt digital channel can carry mid-cycle profitability once the tariff refund rolls off.

The operating story and the legal story are not the same thing. Reported gross margin jumped to a record because the company recognized actual and expected refunds on invalidated International Emergency Economic Powers Act tariffs that cut cost of goods sold by a net $15 million. Strip that benefit and the underlying margin sits near thirty nine percent, below last year's forty one percent result, because expedited freight, promotions for shelf space, and discontinued-style clearance still tax the wholesale line. Retail is the cleaner read. Owned sites, Lehigh CustomFit, and marketplace volume all accelerated after last year's platform upgrade.

Management raised full-year sales growth toward the high single digits and now frames reported earnings near $5 a share versus a similar-to-last-year result once refunds are excluded. Bookings for the back half are described as the strongest in XTRATUF history, and that brand is tracking toward a nine-figure franchise. The open question for the next two seasonal prints is whether wholesale bookings convert at a low-forties gross margin without another legal assist, or whether freight and sourcing friction keep the core profit and loss stuck below the prior-year run rate.
