Quad/Graphics (QUAD): Print Mix Shift Tests the Marketing Platform Thesis

Quad/Graphics is a Wisconsin commercial printer trying to prove it is becoming a marketing-experience platform before large-scale print volume finishes shrinking. The second-quarter print was the first year-over-year sales increase in the current cycle, but the lift came from paper and logistics rather than the targeted categories management cites as the path to a twenty twenty-eight inflection. That distinction is the entire investment debate. A printer that grows by reselling paper is not yet the agency-plus-packaging story the equity is being asked to underwrite.

Adjusted earnings per share jumped even as adjusted EBITDA slipped a touch, because interest expense and depreciation kept falling after years of debt paydown. Net sales reached $578 million in the quarter. Mid-year net debt sat near $394 million. Seasonal working-capital drain is the usual first-half pattern, not a leverage break. The mix problem is more stubborn: paper, ink, and fuel-related sales protect EBITDA through surcharges but dilute the margin. Agency solutions, the supposed higher-value layer, still declined as a share of the first half.

Wakefern, a long-time print account, is now taking Rise as media agency of record and In-Store Connect into thirty ShopRite stores. A new Salt Lake City packaging plant is slated to open in the fourth quarter. Those are the right kinds of proof points. The open question is whether targeted print, packaging, and agency-of-record work can outrun the postal-rate and magazine-insert decline before the twenty twenty-eight growth date management keeps pointing to.
