PDF Solutions (PDFS): Factory Data Platform Tests Conversion Quality

PDF Solutions is trying to become the commercial data and connectivity layer that semiconductor factories actually run on, rather than remaining a specialist yield-analytics vendor. Last year's SecureWise purchase placed the Santa Clara company inside the remote-access path of nearly every large-wafer fab. Second-quarter bookings for secureWISE, DirectScan, and Exensio are the first clean evidence that customers are buying that stack as a system rather than as a collection of tools. Growth is no longer the open question after another mid-teens-plus print and a reaffirmed annual target. Conversion quality is. The equity debate now turns on whether those contracts become cash with software-like discipline, or whether inspection hardware keeps forcing the company back to the capital markets.

The backlog print is the quarter's strongest qualitative signal. Remaining performance obligations rose to $271 million. Sequential growth in that book gives the conversion story a multi-year contract footprint it lacked when the year began. Recurring revenue still provided 80% of sales. The mix nonetheless slipped because more software landed as perpetual licenses and more inspection hardware was accepted up front. Inspection capital spending absorbed most of the quarter's operating cash. That cash drain, not the income statement, is why the May primary offering sits at the center of the shareholder debate.

Management pointed to eight-figure wins in secureWISE and DirectScan plus several seven-figure Exensio agreements with hyperscalers and photonics customers. Three new eProbe tools landed in the field, two of them with new accounts. The company reaffirmed a 20% annual revenue growth target. The question the next several quarters resolve is whether that backlog converts without another equity raise, and whether one customer can keep writing roughly a quarter of the year.
