Oshkosh Corporation (OSK): Fire Line Reset Tests the Backlog Thesis

Oshkosh Corporation is a purpose-built vehicle maker whose midyear print shows demand arriving faster than the factories can convert it into profit. The second-quarter sales lift came with a cut to full-year adjusted earnings, now set near $11 a share, because Pierce fire apparatus is moving from bay assembly to flow lines more slowly than management planned. That factory reset is the investment debate. A large municipal and defense order book only creates value if production actually ships.

Access, the JLG aerial and telehandler franchise, booked $1.5 billion of orders on data-center and infrastructure work. Management describes a rebuilt Access backlog after a soft prior year. Vocational sales were essentially flat, and Transport's Next Generation Delivery Vehicle ramp for the United States Postal Service more than doubled delivery revenue while defense volume faded. Cash conversion improved even as operating margin compressed. That combination is the signature of a company taking customer advances and working down inventory while still paying for the production changeover.

Adjusted operating income fell even as volume rose. A discrete tax benefit flattered GAAP earnings relative to the adjusted line. Management raised the sales outlook while cutting the earnings outlook, which is an honest tell: the book is real and the conversion is not. The next several quarters resolve whether fire-line throughput and postal-vehicle absorption restore margin, or whether mix, tariffs, and factory friction keep earnings power below the guide.
