Northern Technologies (NTIC): Record Demand Meets a Parent Earnings Test

Northern Technologies International enters late fiscal 2026 with the demand story finally printing and the earnings story still refusing to follow. Circle Pines sells ZERUST vapor-corrosion inhibitors into industrial packaging and, more recently, oilfield asset preservation, plus Natur-Tec compostable resins. Third-quarter consolidated sales set a quarterly record as both ZERUST lines accelerated. The parent still posted a net loss after resin costs jumped on Middle East shipping disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz. The debate is no longer whether customers want the chemistry. It is whether volume converts into parent cash before the credit agreement and the joint-venture cash trap decide the residual claim.

The May quarter's tension sits in the spread between volume and residual claim. ZERUST oil-and-gas sales jumped more than seventy percent and pushed trailing-year oilfield revenue through a $10 million threshold that management has treated as proof the Brazil FPSO contract is beginning to scale. Gross margin compressed by nearly five points as polyethylene spiked and Natur-Tec faced price competition. Joint-venture operating income rose even as service fees from the German EXCOR partner, historically a large slice of fee income, fell to nothing in the quarter. The parent is drawing almost the entire JPMorgan revolver after obtaining a covenant waiver in early July.

Whether the next two quarters restore mid-thirties-plus gross margin, restart German fee cash, and put the fixed-charge coverage ratio back above the bank floor is what prices this equity. The shares last changed hands near $7.55, a shade under stated book value, after a year of almost no parent earnings. That multiple is either a discount to a franchise about to earn again or a fair price for a holding company whose cash lives in minority joint ventures the parent does not control. The next test is sequential margin repair, not another sales record.
