Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage is a family-controlled specialty grocer trying to convert a record year into a lasting unit-growth story just as the shopper who produced that record has become more selective. Daily average comparable store sales cooled from last year's mid-single-digit run into a low-single-digit crawl. The people who still shop are spending more per trip, while fewer of them walk through the door. The Isely family still holds a majority of the vote, and in September that control was used to approve a Delaware-to-Texas reincorporation by written consent rather than a public meeting.
The operating tension sits in the mix beneath a still-positive comp. Basket size rose more than three percent in the fiscal third quarter, more than offsetting a decline of almost two percent in transaction count, which is the signature of a loyal core and a thinning fringe. Gross margin compressed toward 29 percent on mix, shrink, and freight. A $2 million business-interruption recovery from last summer's primary-distributor cyber incident flattered administrative expense. Pre-opening costs jumped as the company opened three stores in the quarter, including a first location in Wisconsin that management described as among the strongest opening days in company history.
The fiscal-year outlook was refined lower on comps and diluted earnings after the print, even as the board kept the quarterly cash dividend at $0.15. DoorDash delivery now covers the full fleet at in-store pricing, and private-label penetration continues to climb as value-seeking shoppers trade into the house brand. The question the next several periods resolve is whether nationwide delivery, loyalty-program density, and a mid-single-digit unit-growth cadence can restore traffic without giving back the margin that made last year's earnings look like a new run-rate.
