NBT Bancorp (NBTB): Evans Harvest Meets a Cleaner Spread Franchise

NBT Bancorp has spent a full year digesting Evans Bancorp, and the second quarter is the first print that looks like the combined bank rather than the deal. The Norwich, New York holding company absorbed eighteen Western New York offices, two hundred Evans employees, and a Buffalo-Rochester deposit franchise in May 2025. What remains is a harvest question. Either the higher spread, the EPIC retirement-plan fee line, and a fourteenth consecutive annual dividend increase describe a durable step-up, or the market is already paying for a post-merger honeymoon that has not yet been tested by a harder credit tape.

Net income reached $53 million. Diluted earnings cleared one dollar a share. Fully taxable equivalent net interest margin sat at three hundred seventy-three basis points, fourteen basis points above the year-ago quarter, as deposit costs kept easing even while loan yields drifted a touch lower. Fee income excluding securities gains still supplied more than a quarter of revenue, led by EPIC Retirement Plan Services. Against that, an additional commercial relationship rolled to nonaccrual, and past-due commercial real estate balances jumped from year-end. The allowance still covers nonperforming loans more than twice over, but the migration is no longer theoretical.

Shares last changed hands at $51.51. That sits near the top of the fifty-two-week range and at a premium to tangible book that already assumes the Evans harvest is durable. The board lifted the third-quarter dividend to forty cents and retired a slice of subordinated debt that had just reset higher. The open question is whether commercial past-dues recede as management expects and whether the margin holds as loan yields keep drifting. If both hold, the harvest supports the multiple. If either slips, the stock is priced for a cleaner credit tape than the second quarter delivered.
