MillerKnoll (MLKN): Leadership Reset Tests the Knoll Integration

MillerKnoll enters the new fiscal year as a design collective whose reported profit recovery is an accounting comparison, not an earnings recovery. Andi Owen retired as chief executive after a mutual agreement with the board, and Jeff Stutz, the longtime finance chief who had only recently become chief operating officer, stepped in as interim leader while a search firm runs an internal and external process. The same late-June results that restored GAAP profitability also confirmed a third straight year of declining adjusted operating income. That is the tension the equity is asking the market to resolve: whether a cost-and-cash agenda under a former chief financial officer can harvest the Knoll combination before thin impairment cushions and a newly combined HNI and Steelcase competitor force another write-down.

North America Contract remains the only segment that is expanding both sales and adjusted margin, which is why the company can still describe itself as geographically and channel diverse even as International Contract and Global Retail leak profitability. Retail sales grew, yet adjusted operating margin compressed as fifteen new stores opened and the Holly Hunt brand underperformed. International Contract organic sales declined and adjusted margin fell on mix, currency, and program timing. The prior-year tariff pull-forward that inflated last spring's North America orders also left this year's fourth-quarter order book looking weaker than the underlying demand tape actually is.

The equity last changed hands near twenty one with a market value of about $1420 million. Enterprise value sits near $3105 million, or roughly nine times trailing adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization. The annual dividend of seventy five cents still yields more than three percent. The next several quarters decide whether store maturation and pricing flow-through reverse the adjusted-income slide, or whether another impairment and a larger workplace-furnishings rival lock the multiple at a cycle-trough discount. Whether Stutz's discipline agenda survives a permanent chief executive appointment with enough cash conversion to shrink the Knoll-era debt stack is the question that remains open.
