MercadoLibre (MELI): Commerce Scale Bought With Credit And Shipping

MercadoLibre is spending current-period profit to lock in a larger commerce-and-payments habit across Latin America, and the June quarter is the cleanest evidence yet that the spend is buying behavior rather than empty volume. Management kept the Brazil free-shipping threshold low, kept issuing Mercado Pago credit cards at a faster clip, and kept building first-party assortment plus a China fulfillment node even as operating margin compressed to just under seven percent. The debate is not whether the platform is growing. The debate is whether the margin given up in shipping subsidies and unseasoned card vintages comes back as those cohorts age, or whether earnings power has been reset while the tape still treats the equity as a high-multiple compounder.

Ecosystemic users, people active on both the marketplace and Mercado Pago, grew at a mid-thirties pace and now generate far more merchandise and payment volume per head than single-product users. That is the economic reason to tolerate a weaker earnings print: a user who borrows, pays, and shops inside one wallet is harder to peel away than a buyer who only hunts for cheap shipped goods. The cost of that lock-in showed up in a provision charge that nearly doubled and in shipping costs that outran the top line. Credit-card net interest margin after losses sat in negative territory even as the total book still printed a low-twenties spread after losses.

Net revenue and financial income cleared $10 billion for the first time, on the fastest growth in four years. Net income still slipped to $466 million because the company refused to harvest. Unique buyers and fintech monthly actives both sat in the high eighties of millions. The question the next several prints have to answer is whether card vintages and Brazil shipping unit costs recover, or whether this is simply a thinner platform at a larger scale.
