Medifast (MED): Coach Productivity Versus a Shrinking Field

Medifast is trying to turn a coach-sold meal-replacement franchise into a metabolic-health platform before the field that sells it shrinks past the point of operating leverage. The June quarter held sequential revenue nearly flat even as the independent coach count kept falling, which is the first clean evidence that a smaller and more productive field can stabilize the top line. Productivity per remaining coach rose sharply and now sits at the highest reading since 2022. The investment debate is whether that mix shift is a durable reset or simply the last productive coaches carrying a declining network.

The strategic tension sits in the field, not the kitchen. Active earning coaches fell to 11,700 in the June quarter from 22,800 a year earlier. That collapse still dominates the year-over-year revenue comparison and remains the mechanism that can overwhelm any brand refresh. Average revenue per coach climbed to $6,529. The gain was more than 41 percent versus the year-ago print. The sequential step-up was 20 percent versus the March quarter. Management treats the productivity lift as an early signal that client acquisition at the remaining coaches can eventually refill the field. The stronger counterargument is simpler. A network that has been shrinking since early 2023 can keep losing coaches faster than productivity can offset, and a rebrand does not by itself restore recruiting.

Cash still dwarfs the equity's market value, which is why the stock trades as a stub rather than as a growth franchise. Cash and investments were $170 million at mid-year. Market capitalization sits near $132 million, leaving enterprise value slightly negative after lease liabilities. Full-year revenue guidance spans $270 million to $300 million. The next two prints decide whether Trilivy, the new compensation plan, and the Catalyst cost program convert a flat sequential run-rate into a fourth-quarter profit, or whether coach attrition reasserts itself and the cash box is all that remains.
