Masco (MAS): Tariff Refund Lifts Earnings on Soft Volume

Masco's second-quarter print is a high-quality repair-and-remodel franchise reporting a profit spike that the income statement does not fully earn from volume. The Livonia maker of Behr paint and Delta faucets booked a net benefit from refunds of tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act after the Supreme Court held those tariffs unlawful. That $95 million refund is why adjusted operating profit expanded even as net sales declined. The investment debate is whether the raised full-year earnings outlook describes a better business or a better legal outcome.

Underneath the refund, North American volume is still the constraint. Consolidated sales fell 3 percent, with domestic volume subtracting five points and price plus international volume adding the rest back. Plumbing would have looked healthier without the quarter's concentrated strategic investments, which management framed as a down payment on brand and commercial capability rather than promotions. Decorative Architectural, now a cleaner Behr and Kilz coatings story after Liberty Hardware moved into Plumbing, split again: professional paint grew while do-it-yourself paint declined. The franchise still converts earnings into cash and still hands that cash to shareholders. It is not yet growing units in its home market.

Adjusted earnings reached $1.64 per share. The lifted full-year band now runs from $4.40 through $4.60 and therefore mixes a one-time customs recovery with a still-soft repair cycle. Shares near $68 imply about fifteen times that midpoint, a discount to Sherwin-Williams and roughly in line with other coatings names, which is the market saying the refund is not a new earnings power. The question for the second half is whether North American plumbing volume and do-it-yourself paint stop contracting once the refund and the investment noise drop out of the comparison.
