iQIYI (IQ): AI Pivot Against a Shrinking Domestic Franchise

iQIYI is a Baidu-controlled Cayman streaming platform whose public holders are being asked to underwrite an artificial-intelligence and short-form rebuild after two years of shrinking domestic membership and a collapse in operating profit, while the quoted equity already behaves like a residual claim behind a large working-capital hole and a receivable from the company's own creditor. A mid-September handle near $1.00 capitalizes the equity at about $1.0 billion. That price sits against trailing sales near $3.9 billion and a still-negative GAAP earnings run rate. The debate is not whether the brand still leads Chinese long-form drama. Enlightent already ranks the platform first in that category. The debate is whether an AI-assisted, creator-heavy supply model can stop the membership slide and convert cash flow into a refinancing story before the next convert wall arrives.

The most important recent development is the June short-form breakthrough, not the sequential revenue tick. Enlightent data put iQIYI first in domestic short-form drama share in June, the first month the platform held that rank, after share roughly doubled from the March print. Management tied that move to a refreshed Creator Center and to AI-generated micro titles that recycle capital faster than studio dramas. If short-form keeps audiences inside the app without a matching rise in content cash out the door, the membership line can stabilize even while long-form China stays saturated. If the share spike is a single-title event around The Fireman anniversary cut, the second half looks like another seasonal membership dip with a more expensive content mix.

The tension is that cash improved in the June quarter while the franchise that is supposed to fund the rebuild did not. Membership and advertising each slipped versus the year-ago quarter, other revenue fell sharply after a cooperation arrangement changed, and a discrete mainland tax charge pushed the attributable loss wider. Free cash flow flipped positive because marketing was cut and working capital cooperated, not because unit economics healed. Holders who treat that cash print as proof of an earnings trough are reading a cash-conversion story into a still-shrinking core.

The next test is the second-half membership print against the June short-form claim, together with any update on the PAG receivable and the confidential Hong Kong listing application filed in March. Those three items decide whether the dated close is a distressed multiple on a stabilizing cash engine or a correct discount on a controlled VIE residual.
