The byline above sets the vantage point for everything that follows, a look at one of the most efficient businesses in American financial services. Interactive Brokers turns a self directed trading base into a firm with the margin profile of a software company, and the latest quarter pushed that argument further. Net revenues for the second quarter of 2026 reached $1.90 billion. That is up 28% from the year earlier. Diluted earnings per share landed at $0.69 against $0.51 a year ago.

The pretax profit margin reached 77%, a figure no full service retail brokerage approaches. It arrived with customer equity of $930.3 billion, up 40% year over year. The engine behind the margin is simple to state and hard to copy. Most of the cost of serving a client is paid once, in technology, and each added dollar of trading volume or margin loan then drops to the line at very high incremental margin.

The balance sheet is doing real work. Customer margin loans rose 67% to $108.5 billion. Net interest income climbed 23% to $1.06 billion. The shares trade near $88.80, well inside the 52 week range. A four for one split in 2025 lowered the per share price and broadened the float. The market pays a premium to most brokerages, and that premium is defensible only if two things hold.

The automation cost advantage has to keep beating down expense as revenue scales, and the margin loan book, which now drives a large share of profit, has to survive a sharp rate cut or a fast equity drawdown. The case here is not that the stock is cheap. It is that the earnings quality is high and the visible drivers, customer equity, margin loans, and DARTs, are still compounding at high teens to high twenties. The honest bear view sits in the rate path and the cyclicality of leveraged trading, and the valuation section quantifies where the downside begins.
