Home BancShares enters the second half of 2026 as a larger version of the thing it has tried to be since the late 1990s: a Southern deposit franchise that compounds merger accretion on top of a funding base that refuses to reprice. The Mountain Commerce acquisition, closed on April 1, bolted a Tennessee funding base onto Arkansas, Florida, and Texas, and it reopened an acquisition runway the broader market had largely priced shut. The central question for holders is whether that runway, stacked on a four-and-a-half percent margin, keeps compounding tangible book value faster than the price the market pays for the privilege.

The second quarter printed the mechanism in its cleanest form since the deal closed. Total revenue set a company record near $295 million, up more than ten percent from the prior quarter. Adjusted pre-provision profit set a record of its own, even after absorbing $12.7 million of merger expense. The net interest margin held at 4.51 percent while the yield on earning assets slid under the falling rate environment. Adjusted return on tangible common equity of 16.82 percent remains the cleanest single measure of franchise earnings power, and it exists alongside a capital stack deliberately padded for the next purchase.

The open tension sits in Texas credit, the single unlabeled variable in the equity case. A single loan relationship of $92.1 million went on non-accrual in the first quarter, lifting non-performing loans to 1.08 percent of the book. The ratio had printed 0.54 percent as the year opened. The reserve comfortably covers the exposure nearly two times over. Quarterly loss content stays modest relative to that cushion.

Two dates frame the next evidence cycle for the thesis. The float reset on the 2032 notes arrives January 30, a mechanical reprice of a small funding stack. A dividend stepped up to $0.23 in July already signaled board confidence in the post-deal run rate. Direction on the margin plus any reserve judgment on the Texas exposure settles the premium debate that the tape keeps deferring.
