Futu is a high operating leverage retail brokerage platform whose earnings are a pure function of client assets, trading velocity, and margin balances, and the stock prices that engine as if it were a steady compounder rather than a sentiment instrument.

The second quarter 2026 print posted record trading volume of HK$6.42 trillion. That was up 78.8% year over year. Net income jumped 41.6% to HK$3.64 billion. The mechanism is leverage: margin balances rose 85.1% to HK$95.1 billion. Interest income of HK$3.12 billion now rivals commission income as a revenue pillar. That shift in the revenue mix is the single most important structural change in the earnings model.

The tension sits in the mainland client base, where new compliance rules triggered cumulative asset outflows of a mid-single-digit percentage of total client assets, and in the steadily thinning blended commission rate, which fell to 7.2 bps in 2025. Management says the outflow pace is moderating, but the direction of travel for the Futubull app and its dormant accounts is the biggest swing factor in the earnings path.

The near-term catalysts are product and geography: the United States prediction markets launch, the virtual asset financing approval in Hong Kong, and the Thai license, each of which adds a revenue line that does not depend on mainland investor sentiment.
