Enphase Energy, Inc. (ENPH): A Margin Story Pivoting to AI Power

Enphase delivered a complicated second quarter that the headline gross margin does not adequately describe. Reported revenue of $291.9 million fell roughly 20% year over year as United States residential demand softened after the Section 25D tax credit expired at the end of 2025 and as European installers continued to defer purchasing into a softer rate environment. Against that demand backdrop, GAAP gross margin printed 60.0% and GAAP operating income reached $51.5 million, but the optical strength came almost entirely from a $45.4 million one-time IEEPA tariff refund that flowed through cost of revenue. Strip out that refund and tariff noise, and the non-GAAP gross margin of 46.8% tells a more sober story: pricing is under pressure, IQ Battery MWh shipments were down 40% year over year, and management is guiding to another sequential step down in margin for the third quarter.

The reason the stock is worth debating despite the topline weakness is what Enphase is now building on top of the residential microinverter franchise. The company is deep into commercializing a 1.25 megawatt IQ Solid-State Transformer for AI data center power architecture, has begun shipping the GaN-based IQ9N residential and IQ9S-3P commercial microinverters, and previewed a fifth-generation IQ Battery that promises 50% higher energy density at roughly 40% lower cost. Whether any of that pipeline turns into recurring, margin-accretive revenue over the next several quarters is the question that will determine whether ENPH trades on its current depressed earnings power or on an entirely different multiple.

Balance sheet quality is real. Enphase paid off $632.5 million of the Notes due 2026 in the first half of 2026 and exited the second quarter with $937.7 million in cash and marketable securities, leaving only the $575 million Notes due 2028 on the capital structure. Free cash flow of $25.9 million in the quarter and $61.3 million year to date covers debt service and leaves room to keep the buyback program active. The bull case is that management compounds through the residential downturn, monetizes the Advanced Manufacturing Production Tax Credit, and converts the IQ SST pipeline into a 2027–2028 revenue stream. The bear case is that the OBBBA-driven loss of the residential credit, the European slowdown, and intensifying competition from string-inverter plus DC-coupled storage systems compress the franchise before any data center revenue arrives. The stock is interesting, but the evidence today is not yet enough to call the pivot.
