Datadog (DDOG): The AI Observability Consolidator At A Crossroads

Datadog has turned the post-IPO land-and-expand playbook into a defensible AI-era platform, and the second quarter of 2026 is the cleanest test yet of whether that platform can convert AI adoption into durable usage growth rather than a one-year cohort spike. Revenue grew 36% year over year to $1.12 billion in the quarter. Separately, the dollar-based net retention rate ticked back into the low-120 percent range. The strategic question is whether the AI-native cohort that powered the top end of that growth can stay expanded after the company's largest customer began cutting usage in the third quarter.

The tension sits in the cohort mix, not in the headline. About 4,720 customers now clear $100,000 in annual run-rate revenue. That is up from about 3,850 a year earlier. Those larger accounts make up 91% of the total run-rate. That concentration means a single large account changing its behavior moves the retention metric, and the company itself flagged the reduction in usage from its largest customer starting in the third quarter of 2026 as the reason the low-120 percent print should be read with care.

The balance sheet does the quiet work that the growth story depends on. Operating cash flow reached $316 million in the quarter, and free cash flow came in at $279 million. Cash and marketable securities stood at $5.0 billion against just $1.0 billion of convertible debt. The forward question is whether the third quarter revenue guide, which implies growth that decelerates below 35%, is the start of a re-rating around the retention metric or a one-quarter air pocket before AI workloads reaccelerate usage.
