Culp, Inc. (CULP): Bedding Reset Meets Upholstery Crosscurrent

Culp, Inc. enters the back half of fiscal 2026 as a structurally simpler company that has not yet earned the operating leverage it spent eighteen months purchasing. The North-Carolina-headquartered fabric manufacturer finished Q3 fiscal 2026 with consolidated net sales of $48.0M. That figure is down 8.2% from the comparable prior-year period. Nine-month revenue contracted 7.7% to $151.9M. The result is a tale of two segments in two macro regimes. The bedding platform absorbed a one-week weather shock at its largest U.S. facility and still eked out sewn-cover growth. The upholstery business absorbed a sharper 12.4% quarterly revenue decline as commercial and hospitality project demand stalled. The thesis for the next several quarters rests on whether the cost base rebuilt around a single Culp-branded operating model can translate incremental volume into margin.

The restructuring cycle that began in May 2024 and accelerated with the April 2025 operating-model transformation is now substantially behind the company. The Quebec manufacturing footprint is sold. The Burlington and Knoxville leased upholstery sites are closed. The Stokesdale facility now anchors an integrated bedding and upholstery platform. Q3 fiscal 2026 loss from operations narrowed to $(3.7)M. Prior-year quarterly loss was meaningfully higher. Nine-month operating loss fell sharply to $(5.6)M. Net loss of $(3.4)M for Q3 represents the smallest quarterly bottom-line loss in three years. The nine-month net loss of $(8.0)M reflects the substantial restructuring credit embedded in the year. Adjusted EBITDA of $(2.2)M in Q3 shows the underlying earnings power is still negative, but the trajectory is bending in the right direction.

The operational setup heading into the fourth quarter is cleaner than at any point in the past two years. Cash on hand grew to $9.7M from $5.6M. That base was measured at fiscal year-end 2025. Total liquidity stands at $27.7M including $18.0M of unused borrowing capacity. Inventory of $52.2M is elevated by design. It was built to insulate customers through the restructuring transition and the Chinese New Year shipping window. It now represents the principal working-capital release opportunity heading into fiscal 2027. Culp is small, levered to a cyclical recovery it cannot independently trigger, but the platform is rebuilt and the operating drag from restructuring is largely retired.
