CKX Lands, Inc. (CKX): A Land Royalty Micro-Cap at a Strategic Crossroads

CKX Lands is a 96-year-old southwest Louisiana landholding that earns a small but durable stream of income from mineral royalties, timber harvests, and surface rents on a multi-parcel land base, and the company is now actively soliciting indications of interest from buyers for either its remaining assets or the entity itself. The defining dynamic of the second quarter is the gap between the surface segment's continued strength and the steep decline of the legacy royalty stream, a fall accelerated by the late-2025 sale of producing acres to a timber operator. The strategic review that began in mid-2023 has reached the closing window, and the print itself is a snapshot of the smaller post-divestiture company. The cash position is the most distinctive feature of the post-divestiture balance sheet.

Q2 revenue rose 24% year-over-year. The increase was helped by a 67% jump in surface receipts, which more than offset the decline in legacy royalties. The first-half comparison shows a different story. Total revenue fell 30% as oil and gas royalties collapsed to a small share of the consolidated line. Net income for the quarter was $122,235 against $161,042 a year earlier. The balance sheet ended the period with $15.3M of cash and $2.2M of certificates of deposit, and the company carries no debt at all. The cleanest read is that the underlying business has stabilized at a smaller revenue base after the divestiture, and the cash cushion is the most underappreciated structural feature of the print. The surface segment is now the principal driver of the consolidated line, and the oil and gas segment is a tail contributor at a low-teens share of the year-to-date total. The post-divestiture business is smaller but more balanced.

The next six months resolve whether the strategic review produces a transaction, whether the second-half oil and gas floor holds above the post-divestiture baseline, and whether the surface lease engine can keep absorbing the depletion of the legacy mineral income. The cash and certificates together exceed the current equity-market capitalization, which frames the rest of the year as a closing window in which either a deal is announced or the company returns to operating as an independent at a smaller scale. The print is the cleanest possible evidence that the divestiture has reshaped the income base, and the next two quarters are expected to show whether the post-divestiture business is sustainable at a smaller scale or whether further asset sales are required.
