Chegg, Inc. is in the middle of a stark strategic reset. The company has shrunk from a mid-cap consumer-internet franchise into a sub-$100M market capitalization equity. It posted a fifty-one percent year-over-year revenue decline in the most recent quarter. The equity now trades near $0.83 against a fifty-two week band. That band runs from roughly $0.45 to $1.90. The topline has fallen faster than the cost base, which is the distinguishing feature of the current quarter. Net revenues in the second quarter were less than half the prior-year figure, and the first half of 2026 came in at less than half the prior-year figure as well. The Academic Services line, which still contributes the majority of revenue, has collapsed as generative AI tools and Google's AI Overviews siphoned the homework-helper queries that once drove Chegg's search funnel. Management has responded with three consecutive workforce reductions and four cumulative restructuring programs. The September 1 maturity payoff of the remaining convertible notes leaves the balance sheet debt-free. The Skilling business is small but actually grew, offering a pivot narrative. The investment question is whether the cost cuts have stabilized margins, whether Skilling can offset enough subscription erosion, and whether a debt-free equity that has cut fixed costs by more than half can plausibly rebuild the topline.

The market is treating this as a turn-around option rather than a steady-state franchise. Free cash flow flipped positive on a trailing basis, gross margin held in the mid-50s area, and the convertible maturity overhang has been removed. The bear case is that subscription revenue keeps eroding faster than Skilling grows, that the AI substitution effect is structural rather than cyclical, and that even a debt-free balance sheet cannot offset a revenue base that has halved twice over. The bull case is that the cost reset has already absorbed most of the pain, that AI-native study tools are eventually indistinguishable from a vertically specialized learning platform, and that the equity can compound from a much smaller base. The forward variables that decide the outcome are Academic Services subscriber trends through the fall 2026 back-to-school period, Chegg Skilling's revenue trajectory, and the cash burn rate now that debt service is gone.
